The metrics that matter
GDR is the headline — generic fills divided by substitutable fills, so it isn't penalized for drugs that have no generic. DAW-override rate is the leak gauge: each override is a substitutable script that filled brand anyway, costing margin and dragging GDR down. Generic gross profit quantifies what the substitution is worth in dollars, which is what makes the case for working down the override list.
Why the data is trapped across the systems
GDR looks simple but needs the substitutable flag, the DAW code, and the generic/brand determination joined to margin. The dispensing systems (PioneerRx, BestRx, Liberty) capture DAW codes and substitution status, but tying each override to the gross-profit difference between the brand filled and the generic available — and trending the rate against a target by drug class and prescriber — is exactly the cross-cut a workflow engine doesn't produce.
How to read it
Read GDR against its target line first; a persistent gap is margin and star points left on the table. Then go to DAW reason: a high share of DAW-1 (prescriber-required) is mostly outside your control, but DAW-2 (patient-requested) and others often represent recoverable substitution. The generic-versus-brand split by prescriber group shows which prescribers drive brand fills — a targeted outreach list. Generic gross profit makes the dollars concrete.
